The Apartments
This project entailed the construction of a new chapel and community facilities, incorporating the retention and restoration of the existing, listed 19th century church façade. The time constraints for this project were exceptionally rigid, in order to minimise disruption to the community in terms of church services and the school housed within the building.
The site lies within the Dartmouth Park conservation area in North London, therefore external finishes had to be achieved using traditional materials and construction techniques. Welsh slate roof tiles were used on both the chapel and Manse house, together with extensive stone cleaning and restoration being carried out on the chapel façade. The extensively damaged stained glass windows of the existing façade were carefully removed, restored off site and reinstated to form an integral part of the main worship area.
Internally, a complex steel and glass roof structure enabled an open and capacious place of worship.
The function room had a requirment for no columns, which was achieved by an exclusively designed feature concrete coffered slab ceiling. Solid oak parquet floors, hand crafted arched oak entrance doors, a bespoke glass and stainless steel staircase, with oak nosings and risers, completed a contemporary and imposing entrance hall.
